Our School

First of all, let’s introduce Szombathely, the place where we are from. Szombathely is located in the western part of Hungary, near the Austrian border. It is a famous place as it is the oldest town in Hungary. It was founded by Emperor Claudius in 43 AD. Savaria as it was called then, was a significant city in the Roman empire. It lay close to the important so called “Amber Road”(Borostyánút) which was a trading route from the Baltic to the Mediterranean. Some parts of the Amber Road still can be seen today.

Szombathely is an attractive tourist centre due to the Roman age remains. It also has a pretty main Square (Főtér) with a Holy Trinity Column (Szentháromság szobor) and a fountain (szökőkút). Other places of interest are the baroque buildings for example the County Hall (Városháza), the Bishop’s Palace (Püspöki Palota), the Cathedral (Székesegyház) which is the third largest church in the country.

As for Erasmus+ participants, we work as teachers at the Reményik Sándor Lutheran Primary and Art School, which is the only Lutheran school in our town. It was named after a Lutheran poet, Reményik Sándor. Our school was taken over the local government in 2007, and since then the Lutheran church whose main pastor is György Gregersen-Labossa operates the school. The headmaster is Károly Sátory. They both work a lot on the continuous improvement of the institution. Since 2007 new classrooms and a brand new sports field have been built. We find environmental awareness and of course religious education very important, we always start the school week with a service at the Lutheran Church where the whole school is present. (And of course religious education is built in the Syllabus.)

To talk a little bit about art education, since 2013 we have art classes. Education of art was initiated, worked out and launched by our director Gyöngyi Németh. Children can choose from a great range of art classes, for example we have music, folk dance, drama, contemporary dance, craft classes and so on. The list is almost endless.

It is becoming a great tradition that at the end of the school year the different art classes have a chance to perform, to show the community what they learnt throughout the year. This occasion is a very successful event and called Art Gala. It was organised this year as well for the parents, grandparents, teachers, students, who loved it.

In the future our goal is to restart, begin Tensing in our community. That’s the reason colleagues are participating Erasmus+ trainings. We would like to work out the project of Tensing and launch a Tensing group at our school. For this task, we are looking forward to collect lots of new ideas and get some help.
